Women and Construction – Meet Karen Plant Co-Ordinator

Women and Construction – Meet Karen Thomas – ECL’s Plant Co-Ordinator

Karen recently joined the team in May last year as ECL’s Plant Co-Ordinator; however, it was only a matter of days until Karen became fully ingrained as part of the team. She just fitted in so well, and with her outlandish no-holds-barred wit, she was quick to make an impression. If you’ve met her, you will know exactly what I mean. There really is only one Karen Thomas.

We took some time out to ask Karen about her job and personal life and gather just a little insight into life as a woman in the construction industry.

What got you into this line of work?

It was accidental, really. I started as an office clerk for PB Hire Centres, progressed from there, and the rest is history.

What were you doing before you joined ECL?

Working at M&J Engineers

How did you hear about ECL?

They were a customer, and I’d dealt with Ian and Tracey.

What were your first impressions of the Company?

When I met Tracey and Jackie in reception, they were very professional, upbeat, and friendly. I also thought the office was a lovely environment compared to my previous working premises.

What’s the best bit about your job?

I enjoy all of my roles, the team I work with (especially ECL’s funny man), and the many departments within the company. I’ve been in this industry for many years—you either love it or hate it!

What’s a typical working day look like for you?

Early start – busy all day – Every day is different and has different challenges.

What are the biggest challenges that you face in your position?

I’ve had to work extra hard to prove to people that I’m more than capable of doing the job at hand! Due to the industry being male-dominated, often in my early days and in new companies, you are proving your knowledge that bit harder than my male colleagues.

What motivates you to work hard?

I think this is something you have within yourself. I’ve always been a hard worker and like to make sure that I’m pulling my weight within a team.

Do you have a career path you want to follow?

I have fulfilled many roles within this Industry – Maybe Director is next!! Move over guys!

What’s your greatest achievement to date?

Being a single parent and raising an amazing son. He has just turned 18 and now starting his own journey, which I have every faith he will be extremely successful! (Clearly down to me!)

Whilst he was growing up, I was very fortunate to be able to work part-time at HSS Hire 3 days a week for 10 years, and this enabled me to have the best of both worlds!! Being at school to collect him, like the other mums.

When you’re not working – what keeps you busy?

Family and friends mostly.

Who’s been the most inspiring person in your life? And why?

My parents, they’ve been married for 52 years this year. They have great morals and values, which I have passed to my son (fingers crossed!)

And finally, what words of wisdom would you give to a new recruit?

Write things down – As the guys say here – no question is a silly question!

Teamwork makes the dream work!

And as someone said to me – This may not be my first rodeo, but it is a different horse!
