Vacuum Excavation

Vacuum Excavation (VAC-EX)

ECL’s operated Vacuum Excavation services are available all over the Midlands and the South East and East of England for non-mechanical, non-destructive process of safely exposing buried utilities.

Armed with the latest technology and operated by a specially trained team, we can provide excavation solutions for the most complex of projects whilst removing our reliance on the external hire market.

Furthermore, our service reduces the risk of incidents and injuries to excavation teams. Helping diminish cable strikes whilst meeting our client’s ever-increasing demands for safe, innovative, cost-effective and environmentally friendly construction solutions.

Vacuum excavation embodies innovation, ensuring safety, speed, and economy in the excavation process. Our advanced vacuum excavators are designed to minimise noise and disruption while also reducing vibrations that could potentially harm the site and its surroundings.

WHAT CAN A VAC-EX DO?

6 MAJOR BENEFITS OF VACUUM EXCAVATION

  • Services identified without making physical contact – Avoids service strikes & improves safety.
  • Faster excavation method than hand excavation – Reduces project costs
  • Less surface damage – Reduces the size of excavation required
  • Removal of excavated soil – Surrounding areas are clear of debris
  • Remote arm control -– Allows operatives to remain at a safe distance from service apparatus
  • Less impact on site – Cleaner work area

We are always seeking to invest in innovative ways of working to keep our workforce safe and to be able to provide the best value and service within our industry.

Vac-Ex FAQ's

Vacuum Excavation

WHAT IS A VACUUM EXCAVATOR?

A vacuum excavator is a plant vehicle used in site investigation, general construction and excavation works to remove heavy debris and material from the ground. This machine guarantees expedited excavation without the hazard of interfering or damaging any unforeseen utilities, protecting both our workforce and any underground apparatus.

HOW DOES VACUUM EXCAVATION WORK?

Vacuum excavation is a specialised technique used for safely and efficiently excavating soil and other materials, particularly in sensitive areas where traditional methods might pose risks to underground utilities.

The operation begins with positioning the vacuum excavation truck, which is equipped with a remote-controlled boom. This boom is carefully manoeuvred over the designated excavation area and is typically kept about 6 to 8 inches above the ground. Once in position, the suction process is initiated by activating the fans, which generate a powerful airflow.

A key aspect of this method is maintaining the specified 6 to 8 inch gap between the boom’s suction pipe and the ground. This distance ensures optimal suction while allowing for continuous material removal. As the operation progresses, the boom is adjusted regularly to follow the material being excavated, ensuring a consistent extraction process. In cases where harder materials are encountered, operators can utilise an air lance to loosen them, making the excavation more effective.

One of the primary advantages of suction excavation is its safety. By keeping work areas clear of debris and minimising disruption, operators can significantly reduce the risk of accidents for both workers and passersby. This method is particularly beneficial in urban environments or locations where underground utilities are present, as it helps prevent damage to essential services while ensuring a thorough and efficient excavation process.
