Newark’s major infrastructure projects clean up town

Newark’s major infrastructure

ECL, one of the key contractors from Newark’s biggest infrastructure projects, actively participated in the Great British Spring Clean, joining other volunteers to help tidy up the town of Newark.

Four members of ECL’s Newark site team joined 19 other volunteers from National Highways’ A46 Newark Bypass improvement scheme, including Urban&Civic, the master developer of Middlebeck, and contractors Breheny, who are also working on the town’s Southern Link Road.

In typical British fashion, it rained on the day, but that did not deter the keen volunteers who were up bright and early, donning hi-vis apparel and litter pickers at the ready!

The team collected litter from the Farndon Underpass, Great North Road, and Winthorpe Underpass for two hours. In which time, ECL gathered ten rubbish bags, and as a collective, 45 bags of rubbish were filled with all manner of debris, including a tent, a set of keys, several number plates, and even some discarded toys.

Littering is entirely preventable, and it’s shocking to learn just how many bags the volunteers collected in such a short time.

10,000 REPORTS OF ANIMALS INJURED OR KILLED BY ROADSIDE LITTER IN 3 YEARS

The RSPCA has reported a staggering number of over 10,000 incidents of animals being injured or killed due to roadside litter in the last three years. This alarming statistic underscores the severe and often fatal consequences of littering, highlighting the need for action.

All those involved in Newark’s Great British Spring Clean have not only made Newark safer for the local wildlife and community but have also set a shining example of community responsibility.

Well done to our team, which includes Community Engagement Officer Tracey Penwright and Site Operatives Derek Black, Wesley Egan, and Jatinder Kamar, for their outstanding effort on the day. We also want to express our thanks to the organisers, National Highways and Skanska, and all the volunteers for their invaluable contributions.

Newark Construction Community Work

The Great British Spring Clean, the nation’s most extensive mass-action environmental campaign, is a crucial initiative that aims to clean up the country’s streets, parks, and beaches. So, until the next Big Spring Clean, let’s continue our efforts to keep Britain clean and tidy and preserve the wildlife and community around us.
